Herzog & de MeuronBasel, Switzerland
For a second railroad bridge across the Rhine, Herzog & de Meuron chose the well-tried steel framework structure, which guarantees a high recognition value against the neighboring concrete highway bridge. The simple and relatively lightweight railroad bridge rests on two pillars like a beam above the river. Its diagonal struts are entering into a relationship with the Y-supports of a nearby turbine hall, its green color with the adjoining green zone. The bridge-heads are oriented towards the fair-faced concrete structure that was established with the highway bridge. The railroad bridge integrates into the existing situation without being extravagant.
