374.1 Talstation Unterwasser
Chäserrugg is the easternmost of the seven Churfirsten peaks and rises 2,262 meters above sea level. The ridge gently ascends from the Toggenburg valley to the north, then descends sharply to the south, forming a steep rock face that plunges nearly 1,900 meters down to the Walensee. Chäserrugg has been welcoming tourists ever since the construction of the Unterwasser – Iltios – Chäserrugg cable cars. The valley station in Unterwasser serves as the central gateway to the Chäserrugg area all year round. The funicular to Iltios began operating in 1934, followed by the cable car to Chäserrugg in 1972. Local limestone was used as the building material for the original structures of the Iltiosbahn, including the valley station, the viaduct, and the mountain station. The new valley station is designed as a classic train station, with the funicular train entering the central, open hall. From there, guests have access to a café, lockers and a reception desk with a visitor information service. Adjacent to the open hall are the offices of Klangwelt Toggenburg and logistical facilities. A large gabled roof spans the hall and the adjoining spaces.
