Roche pRED Center
The new Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development Center of the Basel-based pharmaceutical company Roche, known as the pRED Center, consists of an ensemble of four interconnected individual buildings located along the central axis of the Roche Basel Site on Grenzacherstrasse, a public street that runs through the area. The streetscape has been enhanced with plants and seating to create an urban centre within the neighborhood. Building on the early concepts of noted Swiss architect Otto R. Salvisberg, the in-house architect for Roche from the 1930s and the progenitor of the overall ‘white building’ motif and original campus master plan, the pRED Center buildings integrate into the surrounding urban grid. The four buildings rise from west to east from a height of 60 ft (18 m) to 374 ft (114 m) providing a sense of scale related to the adjacent residential neighborhood. On ground level, the four buildings are connected by the ‘Avenue’, a large, covered boulevard and a plug-in point for numerous special services from lobbies, conference space and offices to dining and social spaces.
