Herzog & de MeuronEngelberg, Switzerland2017

The mountain station emerges from the rock like a flat crystal. This new building and its crystalline envelope incorporate the existing Titlis Rotair cableway, making it an integral part of the overall composition; The concrete structure of the existing station is wrapped in a second layer, accommodating various technical functions such as stairs and lifts. In this way, the existing built footprint on the mountain is preserved rather than expanded. Structurally related to the tower but horizontally oriented, the mountain station deliberately avoids competing with the tower’s strong presence. Its load-bearing structure consists of a network of tension and compression elements, directing loads into the rocky ridge below while spanning a generous, hall-like interior. A key difference from the tower lies in the position of the structure. Whereas the tower’s load-bearing structure stands outside the façade, that of the mountain station is brought inside, where visitors experience it directly. The interior follows the slope of the terrain.
