The new building of the University Hospital Basel in Perimeter B at Schanzen-/Klingelbergstrasse is a three-pronged project that addresses urban planning, architecture and hospital planning. It begins with a radical review of current urban renewal and contextualizes the new building within the larger history of architecture. The three-part composition of base, cube and pavilion is determined by urban context and function. The long term idea of a concentrated Health City must be developed in connection with enlarging the open space of the hospital garden. Basel and the Life Sciences: University and Health City The Basel University Hospital, situated within the city walls dating from the 13th century, is embedded in the small-scale structure of the Old Town. In contrast to the perimeter city blocks that characterize the surroundings, the hospital campus consists of distinctive, single buildings constructed over many decades around an inner-city garden that has always been a public park. The decision to keep the hospital near the University and to increase its density has attracted other institutions in the fields of teaching, research and healing, such as the ETH Zürich.
