With a history dating back to 1681, Basel’s Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is one of the oldest urban hotels in Europe. Built in 1844, today’s main building is the work of Amadeus Merian, a renowned Basel architect. Between 2004 and 2006 it was comprehensively modernized and remodeled in accordance with historic preservation principles by the architect Christian Lang; The neighboring building, dating back to 1903 and formerly housing the Basler Kantonalbank, was simultaneously integrated into the hotel ensemble, and the language of forms and color scheme of the historic main building upheld throughout that new extension. As part of our current project, our aim was to programmatically re-conceptualize and redesign this bank building facing onto Schifflände, investing it with a distinctive identity that deliberately sets it apart from the original main building. By giving each space its own, specially developed design, we will be endowing Les Trois Rois with new spatial experiences and surprising changes of atmosphere.
